Citation Tracker
A GEO/AEO tool category that auto-tracks how often and how much your domain is cited inside answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
What is a Citation Tracker?
A Citation Tracker is a GEO/AEO tool category that fires core category queries against answer engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, then tracks how often and how much your domain shows up inside the response body. Its core job is monitoring Answer Inclusion Rate and Citation Share on a time-series view.
Where a robots/schema checker measures static site signals (access, structure), a Citation Tracker measures actual answer outcomes. The two complement each other, and teams in the operating stage of GEO/AEO typically run both.
What it tracks
| Measured surface | Output |
|---|---|
| 10–20 core category queries | Answer Inclusion Rate (weekly / monthly trend) |
| Same query × 5–10 repeats | Variance-absorbed average citation rate |
| Source cards + body text mentions | Citation Share (us vs competitors) |
| ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews | Per-platform citation pattern differences |
Adoption caveats
- Sample size. Judging from a single call is too noisy to be meaningful. Pick a tool that can repeat each query 5–10 times.
- Query bundle design. Monitoring only branded queries (e.g., "RanketAI pricing") inflates Answer Inclusion artificially. Generic category queries (e.g., "best AI visibility tools") are the core target.
- Per platform. ChatGPT rarely shows source cards but mentions brands often in body text; Perplexity tends to show more source cards. Don't sum scores across platforms — break them out separately.
