Source Gap

Definition

Third-party sources cited in AI answers when competitors are mentioned but never connected to your brand — or that overall deficit. With over half of AI citations coming from third-party content, the source gap is the starting point for winning external surfaces

What is a source gap?

A source gap is a third-party source that gets cited as evidence when AI answers mention your competitors in a category question, but has never been connected to your brand — or the overall deficit those sources represent. AI citations do not come only from a brand's own site. In OtterlyAI's analysis of 1M+ citations (2026), community platforms captured 52.5% of citations while brand domains took 47.5%. In that structure, the list of external surfaces backing your competitors is effectively the list of places you need to be published next.

Why does the distinction matter?

On-page optimization competes only for the brand-domain half of citations; the source gap is the fight for the other half — external surfaces. If a ghost citation is an asset-credit problem ("my site is cited but my brand goes unnamed"), the source gap is its mirror image: an entry problem ("I am absent from the surfaces backing my competitors"). The prescriptions differ — ghost citations call for brand imprinting, source gaps call for surface acquisition (publishing, contribution, press).

How is it measured?

Collect the citation domains attached to AI answers where competitors are mentioned, then keep the domains never cited in answers that mention your brand. Only citations verified as actually retrieved by the AI should count — LLMs sometimes fabricate URLs, and an unverified gap list can hand you nonexistent sites as action items.

Measurement notes

  • Classification precedes execution — a large share of gap sources can be structurally unreachable (other companies' blogs, public institutions). Split into direct publishing (UGC) / press or contribution / unreachable, and spend effort only on the first two.
  • Domain-level output turns into a to-do list — unlike "raise your share of voice," "get published on these sites" is directly actionable.
  • Confirm closure by remeasuring — after publishing, rerun the same question set and check whether the domain has left the gap list. External citations typically take weeks to register.
