AI Retrievability

Definition

The degree to which AI search systems can read a website and brand information, verify its identity, and retrieve it as evidence for answers. A real business that AI cannot read or verify gets dropped from answers, making retrievability the precondition of AI visibility

What is AI retrievability?

AI retrievability is the degree to which AI search systems can read a website and brand information (crawl and extract), verify its identity, and retrieve it as evidence for answers. It is the precondition of visibility — AI does not recommend what it cannot confirm. In a 2026 audit of 71 verified businesses in Canada, the average business met only 15.6% of what AI needs to judge it trustworthy and retrievable, and 17% had no AI-accessible digital presence at all (Search Engine Land, 2026).

Why separate it from visibility?

Visibility is an outcome metric — "do I appear in AI answers?" Retrievability is the condition that precedes it — "can AI read and confirm me at all?" Producing more content while retrievability is low is like stacking flyers in front of a locked door. Typical blockers: sites rendered only by client-side JavaScript with no extractable text, lapsed domains, identity fragmented across multiple domains, and credentials that exist only inside images.

What is it made of?

  • Machine readability — core facts (name, address, services, responsible person) exist as HTML text without JavaScript execution. Some AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.
  • Identity confirmability — the legal entity, brand, and responsible person connect consistently through one canonical domain and structured data.
  • Operating signals — live domains, working policy pages (privacy, terms), and update traces that show the business still operates.
  • Access permission — robots.txt does not block AI bots from collecting the site.

Measurement notes

  • There is a diagnostic order — retrievability (can it be read?) → visibility (is it mentioned?) → citation (is it used as evidence?). When a downstream metric is low, the cause often sits upstream.
  • Self-checks work — if your business name and address cannot be found in the browser's "view page source," there is no extractable text.
  • Independent of build quality — professionally built sites can still score near zero if they rely solely on client-side rendering.
