Primary Source Verification
Tracing a factual claim back to the announcing party's original document, then recording the verification date and the status of anything left unverified
What is primary source verification?
Primary source verification is the practice of tracing a factual claim — what changed, and when — past the secondary outlet that repeated it, all the way to the announcing party's original document, and then stamping the verification date onto your own page. Interpretation and forecast can be cited to a publication; factual claims are grounded in the original.
Three things belong in the document: the original link, the as-of date, and the status of anything you could not verify.
Why it matters for GEO
AI answers do not automatically distinguish a primary source from a summary of it. When the same claim repeats across many domains, the retrieval stage sees a shape that reads as "multiple sources agree," and figures or scope often expand as the claim passes down the re-quoting chain (see claim amplification).
A document that carries its verification trail hands AI the evidence along with the citation. A figure attributed only to "industry reports" may still be cited, but the path back to the source is broken.
The working procedure

| 3. Stamp the date | Write "verified 2026-08-03" so a later change does not make the document false |
| 4. Mark what is unverified | Instead of deleting a figure whose study you could not identify, label it "withheld" to show how far verification went |
Applying it
- Start with figures that drive decisions — when time is short, limiting original-source checks to the numbers behind a decision still captures most of the benefit.
- Carry the scope across unchanged — the moment "the default inside one feature" becomes "the default for the whole product," the factual claim has changed.
- Log corrections with an update date — when the facts move, revise the body and raise the update stamp with it. Changing the date alone is not recommended (see content freshness).
