Content freshness is the signal — how recently a piece of content was updated — that influences its odds of being cited by AI. Answer engines, especially those that rely on live web search, treat pages with current information as more trustworthy evidence.
Per 2026 industry analyses, most pages cited by AI had been updated within the past 12 months, and in fast-moving fields the citation odds of older pages dropped sharply. In other words, freshness works not only for earning a citation but also for keeping it (see Citation Decay).
Why Freshness Works for AI Citations
- Live-search-dependent engines — Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and others search the web at response time, so recently updated documents have a timeliness advantage.
