What is a paid brand mention?

A paid brand mention is the practice of paying to insert brand mentions into third-party content in order to artificially lift a brand's citations in AI answers. Common channels include Private Blog Networks (PBNs), aged community accounts, and paid links rebranded as "partnerships." It is the Paid quadrant of the marketing PESO model applied to answer-engine citations — the opposite signal to earned media, where third parties cite a brand voluntarily.

Why it is a problem

Per Search Engine Land, PBN mentions cost roughly 10–15× a typical SEO backlink (one example: about $250 per single mention). Even small amounts of text can have an effect: Cornell research cited by Search Engine Journal found that roughly 13 words of planted text inserted an attacker's chosen entity into the result in 38–51% of sessions.

But three traps follow.

Trap Description
Disclosure violation The FTC requires clear disclosure on paid advertising, yet paid mentions are often inserted without a sponsorship label
Entity confusion & reputation damage Scattering mentions across topically irrelevant domains can make an LLM mislearn a brand's entity
Short shelf life The effect is estimated at roughly 1–2 years before AI platforms refine spam detection; Google's June 2026 spam update began enforcing against generative-AI answer manipulation

How it differs from earned media

The key is relevance, transparency, and verifiability. Being cited voluntarily on relevant outlets with verifiable information is earned media; paying to buy mentions on unrelated domains is a paid brand mention. The former is a base asset that does not decay as long as you refresh it; the latter is a temporary asset that disappears with detection and removal, and a target of regulators and platforms.
