What Is Instant Checkout?

Instant Checkout is a purchase experience where users view a product, confirm order details, and complete the purchase inside an AI conversation or recommendation surface without leaving for a separate merchant site. OpenAI introduced Instant Checkout in ChatGPT in 2025 and described ACP as the protocol behind the experience.

The core goal is to shorten the distance between recommendation and purchase.

How Does It Work?

Instant Checkout works by letting the AI platform and merchant system exchange order information.

• The user asks a shopping question.
• The AI recommends relevant products.
• Products that support Instant Checkout show a purchase action.
• The user confirms shipping and payment details.
• The merchant's existing systems handle order processing, payment, fulfillment, and customer support.

The AI becomes a purchase surface, while the merchant keeps order handling and the customer relationship.

Why Does It Matter?

If Instant Checkout spreads, AI answers become real revenue channels instead of only information surfaces. Brands need to give AI systems enough product data, pricing, inventory, shipping, return, and trust information to justify recommendation.

If a product is not included in the AI recommendation set, it will not benefit from instant purchase flows.
