What is a Custom GPT?
A Custom GPT is a tailored version of ChatGPT that combines instructions, knowledge, capabilities, and actions for a specific purpose. You can build one without coding, and a public one can be discovered and used in the GPT Store. Per OpenAI's announcement, more than 3 million GPTs have already been created.
The four components

Publishing (going public) flow
- Set a trust signal by verifying your domain (DNS TXT, etc.) in the builder profile
- Enter instructions, knowledge, conversation starters, and actions
- Change visibility to "everyone" and submit to the GPT Store
- After OpenAI review (a few days to about a week), confirm it appears in search
Why does it matter for GEO?
A Custom GPT is a way to directly occupy your own surface inside ChatGPT instead of waiting for a web citation. As an OpenAI-only distribution surface that other engines lack, it lets your brand answer from within ChatGPT. Measure the effect by views, conversation start rate, return rate, and action success rate.
