Dark Traffic

Traffic that arrives without referrer information and is bucketed as direct by analytics tools. Common from AI apps and in-app browsers, it causes AI referral traffic to be undercounted.

What is Dark Traffic?

Dark traffic is traffic that arrives without referrer (source) information and is therefore logged as "direct" by analytics tools. It actually came from somewhere else, but the empty source makes it hard to attribute credit to the right channel.

Why dark traffic is growing in the AI era

Visits routed through AI answer-engine apps, in-app browsers, and messaging previews often drop the referrer. As a result, channels with little visible referral — ChatGPT being the classic case — are undercounted relative to their true contribution.

How to correct for dark traffic

  • Treat referrer-based AI referral splits as measuring only the "visible" portion.
  • Track spikes in direct traffic and trends in branded-search volume to estimate the "invisible" portion.
  • Cross-reference AI visibility measurement (which answers cite your brand) to interpret traffic shifts more accurately.
