Zero-Click AI Search

Definition

A search behavior where information demand is settled inside the AI answer, so no click to a website ever happens. Only 5.2% of ChatGPT conversations produced an outbound click — about one sixth of Google's 31.1%.

What is zero-click AI search?

Zero-click AI search is a search behavior where the user's information demand is settled inside the AI answer, so no click to a website ever happens. Traditional search brokered information demand to websites; AI search synthesizes an answer from many sources on the spot, and a satisfied user goes nowhere.

How severe is it — 5.2% vs 31.1%

A 2026 arXiv study (pre-peer-review) analyzing Comscore U.S. desktop clickstream data found that only 5.2% of ChatGPT conversation sessions produced an outbound click, versus 31.1% for Google searches — about one sixth. The same study estimates that wider ChatGPT Search access cut traditional search use itself by 9.4%.

Relation to search displacement

Zero-click is the "visits disappear" effect; search displacement is the "searching itself migrates to AI" effect. When the two stack, website traffic shrinks twice over — people search less, and even when they ask, they don't click.

What it means for brands

Even without clicks, exposure and recommendation keep happening inside the answer. Whether your brand makes the list an AI names when a user asks "which tool is good?" becomes an exposure metric that precedes visit counts. Measurement in a zero-click environment therefore pairs visit analytics (GA4) with directly checking mentions and citations inside AI answers.
