Category Ownership
The state in which one brand is consistently the top-mentioned name across an entire category's question types in AI answers — established when it holds the top mention share, appears in at least 4 of 5 prompt types, and leads the runner-up by 5+ percentage points
What is category ownership?
Category ownership is the state in which one brand is consistently and dominantly mentioned across the full range of questions in a category within AI answers. It is not winning a single question — it is being named repeatedly across every way the category gets asked.
The operational definition comes from Kevin Indig's 2026 study (Growth Memo). There, a "clear owner" is a brand that meets three conditions at once:
| Condition | Threshold |
|---|---|
| ① Share | Highest share of brand mentions in the category |
| ② Consistency | Named in at least 4 of the 5 prompt types (definition · comparison · alternatives · use case · purchase decision) |
| ③ Gap | At least 5 percentage points ahead of the runner-up |
Condition ② is the crux. A brand that only appears in comparison prompts, or only in definition prompts, is not an owner. The owner is the brand that shows up however the question is asked.
Why it matters — mostly empty, and it hardens once filled
Tracking 1,094 US categories in ChatGPT answers over six months, the same study found a clear owner in only 15.2% of categories, while 53.7% were open competition — multiple contenders, no leader. Weighted by estimated AI search demand, 89.3% sat in categories with no clear owner.
The opposite-direction number gives the concept its strategic weight: once a brand became a clear owner, it kept the #1 position in 90.4% of month-over-month comparisons. Unowned categories are opportunities; owned categories become structures that are hard to flip.
Citations do not equal ownership
Category ownership is not acquired through citation volume. In the same dataset, the most-cited domain matched the most-named brand in only 20.8% of categories, and the correlation between citation volume and naming frequency was -0.229. Citation is the condition for entering the source pool an AI draws on; ownership is the outcome of the brand name appearing repeatedly in the answer's sentences. It is the same structure as the citation–mention gap described by Ghost Citation.
How to assess it
- Per category, build the questions customers actually ask across the five prompt types (definition · comparison · alternatives · use case · purchase decision).
- Run the same question set repeatedly across multiple AI platforms, recording ① whether the brand appears ② how consistently (in how many prompt types) ③ the gap to the runner-up.
- Check consistency before the gap — a #1 that appears in only some prompt types is a contest, not ownership. By the study's threshold, a lead under 5 percentage points (especially under 3pp) should be managed as open competition.
AI answers vary between runs, so repeated measurement — not a single check — is the premise. The original study itself judged durability with monthly tracking over six months, not a single snapshot.
