Reddit Citations in ChatGPT Fell 86% in Four Days — Korean Queries Were at 0% All Along

Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from 3.83% to 0.52% in four days (Promptwatch), after site: queries jumped to 16.8% of fan-out. In RanketAI's Korean-market measurement, 492 citations included zero community sources.

Three-line summary

  • Reddit citations in ChatGPT Search collapsed. By Promptwatch's count, Reddit's share fell from a 3.83% average (July 18–August 7) to 0.52% (August 14–17), an 86.4% drop. The decline came in two steps after site: queries jumped from 0.37% to 16.8% of fan-out on August 8.
  • The cause is not settled. The six-day gap between the site: change (Aug 8) and the largest drop (Aug 14) is unexplained, and Promptwatch itself says a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out. Google AI Overviews (−11%) and AI Mode (−30%) declined only gradually.
  • In Korean purchase-intent queries, community sources were at 0% to begin with. RanketAI measured 33 Korean-market responses on August 29: of 492 citations, Reddit, Namu Wiki, Naver Blog and Tistory appeared zero times, while tool vendors and official sites accounted for roughly 80%. The "Reddit strategy" never applied to Korean B2B queries in the first place.

What happened — four days in numbers

Promptwatch tracks responses collected from the live interfaces of major AI platforms and reports, per day, Reddit's share of citations among responses that include at least one citation. The data published on August 18 comes down to this:

Window Reddit citation share (ChatGPT Search) Note
July 18 – August 7 3.83% (average) stable for three weeks
August 8 3% range → mid-2% range first drop — same day as the site: surge
August 14 below 1% second drop — the cliff
August 14 – 17 0.52% (average) 86.4% relative decline

Google looked different over the same window. Reddit's share in AI Overviews went from 2.37% to 2.10% (−11.3%) and in AI Mode from 2.22% to 1.54% (−30.5%) — a gradual slope, not a one-day cliff. So the event reads not as "AI search abandoned Reddit" but as a change in how one engine, ChatGPT, searches.

"This chart shows when the shift happened, not why. A data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so treat the size of the drop as provisional." — Promptwatch, Reddit Citations Are Dropping in ChatGPT (2026-08)

The leading explanation — site: queries up 46×

Promptwatch's hypothesis is a change in search behavior. From August 8, ChatGPT raised the share of fan-out queries (the step that breaks one question into several searches) carrying a site: operator from 0.37% to 16.8%, and the average number of searches per response nearly doubled from 1.08 to 1.83. Domain-scoped searches were added on top of existing ones, not swapped in.

Why that hurts Reddit is straightforward. When ChatGPT runs a site: query about a brand or product, the targets are official sites, documentation and institutional domains — not discussion platforms. With more searches pointed at official sources, the candidate pool for citations tilts that way and Reddit's relative share falls.

The site: surge itself is not new. Late-July measurements by Peec AI and Nectiv already put site: usage at 23–64% of fan-out queries, and we covered the trend — and the reading of it as an "E-E-A-T shift" — in One Query Becomes 12 Searches. August 8 looks like the point where that trend moved a large step further.

What remains unexplained — the six-day gap

Search Engine Journal pointed out that the hypothesis does not fully fit the data. The site: share jumped on August 8, but Reddit's share did not fall below 1% until August 14, six days later. The first drop (3% range → 2% range) is consistent with the search change; the second cliff needs a cause of its own.

Three candidates are on the table.

Hypothesis Evidence Status
A further OpenAI search change No separate change log matching Aug 14 unverified
Reddit blocking crawlers via robots.txt Single-source speculation; neither Promptwatch nor SEJ presents evidence unverified
A Promptwatch collection issue Promptwatch states it cannot be ruled out open

There is a precedent. When Reddit citations dropped in a similar way in September 2025, one analyst traced the cause not to OpenAI but to Google removing the num=100 search parameter. Once data providers lost access to deeper-ranked results, the Reddit threads that typically lived there appeared to vanish. This time as well, failing to separate "a decision by the AI engine" from "a change in the measurement pipeline" can lead to the wrong response.

In short, the claim that "ChatGPT dropped Reddit" is not yet supported. What is established is that ChatGPT's search behavior shifted toward official sources on August 8, and that Reddit's share fell sharply afterward.

Korean queries showed a different picture from the start

The story is big in the US SEO community because, over the past year, "leave answers on Reddit to earn AI citations" became a widespread tactic. To check whether that tactic ever applied to Korean brands, we reclassified our own measurement from the same week by source type.

The measurement conditions:

Item Detail
Run date August 29, 2026
Path ChatGPT web search via the official OpenAI API, search location Korea
Questions 11 purchase-intent questions in the "AI search visibility diagnostic tool" category × 3 runs = 33 responses
Citations 492 URLs, 105 unique hosts

Cited hosts by type:

Source type Citations Share Examples
Tool vendors / official sites ~400 ~80% semrush.com 39 · ahrefs.com 37 · otterly.ai 25 · many Korean vendors
Official docs / help pages 58 11.8% support.google.com 13 · help.naver.com 10 · searchadvisor.naver.com 7
Media 19 3.9% techradar.com
Review platforms 16 3.3% g2.com
Community / UGC (Reddit, Namu Wiki, Naver Blog, Tistory, Brunch, YouTube) 0 0%

Reddit was cited zero times, and so were its Korean counterparts — Namu Wiki, Naver Blog and Tistory. Korean domains accounted for 77 citations (15.7%), all of them vendor sites or Naver's official help and advertising documentation. We have no pre-August-8 data, so we cannot say the change "drove it to zero". What is clear is that for Korean purchase-intent queries in a B2B tool category, ChatGPT cites official sites and documentation, not communities.

The limits matter. This is a small sample — one category, one model, 33 responses — and categories where reviews and first-hand accounts drive the decision (consumer goods, clinics, academies, restaurants) may show a different mix. Our own domain (15 citations) is also among the cited hosts. Read these figures as an observation about "these questions in this category", not about the Korean market as a whole.

What Korean brands should look at

Three points.

First, do not change your strategy based on another site's citation trend. This matches SEJ's advice: before changing how you use Reddit, check your own domain's citation trend. A brand with zero Reddit citations in Korean B2B queries is unaffected by this event.

Second, in an environment with more site: searches, the advantage goes to well-indexed official sources. When ChatGPT scopes a search to a domain, whether your service, documentation and pricing pages are searchable — and whether AI bots can read the body text — is the precondition for being cited. Official docs and help pages taking 11.8% of citations in our measurement points the same way. You can start this check without logging in via Site Check.

Third, find the citation sources outside your own domain. Review platforms (g2.com) and media (techradar.com) took 7% in our measurement, and as we laid out in The Source Gap, the next task is identifying the third-party sources that cite only your competitors. Competitor Compare shows which engine draws on which source, side by side, on the same question set.

Frequently asked questions

Should we stop answering on Reddit?

If Reddit was being cited for your US consumer or software category, check your own domain's Reddit URL citations before and after August 14 first. In an area that was at 0% to begin with, such as Korean B2B queries, there is nothing to stop — other sources were being cited all along.

By Promptwatch's data it is specific to ChatGPT. Google AI Overviews fell 11% and AI Mode 30%, gradually, with no one-day cliff. That engines choose sources differently is also visible in our Perplexity source-selection observation.

If communities are at 0% in Korean queries, can we ignore Namu Wiki and Naver Blog?

For the category we measured (B2B tools), yes. We did not measure categories such as clinics, academies or restaurants, where reviews and personal accounts are central to the decision. The safe route is to measure with your own category's questions.

Should we act when the cause is not confirmed?

The direction is the same regardless of cause. It is confirmed that ChatGPT increased domain-scoped searches after August 8, and that environment favors well-indexed, accessible official pages. Whatever the cause turns out to be, this check costs nothing.

With a small budget, what comes first?

Within the free tier, run Site Check to confirm AI bot access and structure, then use the brand visibility trial to see which sources each engine cites for you. If no community sources show up, there is no reason to spend budget on community activity.

How reliable is the "0%" in this article?

It is a small sample — 33 responses, 492 citations, one category. The zero count itself is certain, but it is not enough to generalize to the Korean market. As the August benchmark showed, where re-measurement variance exceeded month-over-month change, decide after repeating the same questions.

Summary

The collapse of Reddit citations in ChatGPT is real, but the "why" is still open. Three facts are established: site: searches surged on August 8, Reddit's share fell sharply afterward, and Google's decline was gradual. In Korean B2B queries, community sources were at 0% from the start, and ChatGPT cited official sites, documentation and review platforms instead.

The standard that remains is your own domain's citation trend. Confirm which engine pulls your brand from which source, then change strategy. AI Brand Visibility Analysis is free to try after login.

Data Basis

  • Primary source: Promptwatch, "Reddit Citations Are Dropping in ChatGPT" (data page) and its explainer (2026-08-18/19). Reddit share (3.83% average for 2026-07-18 to 08-07 → 0.52% average for 08-14 to 08-17, an 86.4% relative drop), the two-step timeline (08-08 and 08-14), the site: operator share (0.37% → 16.8% on 08-08), searches per response (1.08 → 1.83), and the Google AI Overviews (2.37% → 2.10%, −11.3%) and AI Mode (2.22% → 1.54%, −30.5%) comparisons were read directly from the originals on 2026-08-29. Promptwatch measures "Reddit's share of citations among responses that included at least one citation", does not disclose daily sample size, and states that a data-collection issue cannot be ruled out, so the size of the drop is provisional.
  • Secondary coverage: Search Engine Land (Danny Goodwin, 2026-08-19), Search Engine Journal (2026-08-20), Forbes (2026-08-20). SEJ notes the unexplained six-day gap between the site: change (08-08) and the largest drop (08-14), and the September 2025 precedent tied to Google removing the num=100 parameter. The claim that Reddit blocked crawlers via robots.txt comes from a single source; neither Promptwatch nor SEJ presents evidence, so this article treats it as an unverified hypothesis only.
  • Own measurement: RanketAI ChatGPT visibility baseline (2026-08-29 14:04 UTC), ChatGPT web search via the official OpenAI API with search location set to Korea. 11 purchase-intent questions in the "AI search visibility diagnostic tool" category × 3 runs = 33 responses, 492 cited URLs, 105 unique hosts. Hosts were classified as tool vendor/official site, official docs/help, media, review platform, or community (UGC). This is a small sample from one category and one model and is not generalized to the Korean market. ranketai.com (15 citations) is among the cited hosts, so this is first-party data.
